The sky on the U.S. Independence Day this year could look murky.
Many Americans have started worrying that the traditional Fourth of July fireworks could be blown up by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.
A sense of panic has settled over the fireworks industry in the U.S. after Trump threatened to impose tariffs on another 300 U.S. billion worth of Chinese imports, which include fireworks.
The country's firework industry deeply relies on China's pyrotechnic products. Of the 250 million pounds of fireworks that are imported by the U.S. each year, nearly 95 percent come from China, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association.
"We're concerned the heartland of America will be most affected in terms of their skies being dark on Independence Day," Julie Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, told financial information website Market Watch. Impacted by the possible tariffs, some fireworks companies are mulling a hike in prices, while some small towns will have to cancel their Fourth of July fireworks displays.
Apart from fireworks suppliers, retail outlets and consumers may also have to suffer from Trump's proposed tariffs. This year's Christmas season could be tighter for many Americans, as festive items like tech products, game consoles, toys, cribs, ornaments and Santa hats are all among the tariff list.
A seven-day tariff hearing held by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) will run from June 17 to 21 and June 24 to 25, with over 300 American enterprise officials lining up to voice their views.
Dissenting voices are overwhelming. Over 600 U.S. manufacturers, retailers and other companies and trade groups, featuring Walmart, Costco, Target, Gap, Levi Strauss, and Foot Locker, in a joint letter wrote to the White House, urged Trump to end the trade war against China or the new round of tariff will do nothing but harm U.S.'s own business.
"We know firsthand that the additional tariffs will have a significant, negative, and long-term impact on American businesses, farmers, families, and the US economy," reads the letter, "An escalated trade war is not in the country's best interest, and both sides will lose."
Trump has claimed that China pays the tariffs, but U.S. importers actually foot the bill and pass them on to consumers.
Quite a lot of Americans worry about the rising prices caused by tariffs as well. Statistics from Federal Reserve Bank show that the possible tariffs will make an American family pay an extra 831 U.S. dollars annually.
Champagne and Merlot could also be going up in price after Trump hinted he might raise tariffs on French wines.
"France charges us a lot for the wine. And yet we charge them very little for French wine." Trump said in a CNBC interview on June 10. "You know what? It's not fair. We'll do something about it," he added.
Trump's comments followed a tweet along the same lines in November 2018, in which he said "France makes excellent wine, but so does the U.S. The problem is that France makes it very hard for the U.S. to sell its wines into France, and charges big Tariffs, whereas the U.S. makes it easy for French wines, and charges very small Tariffs. Not fair, must change!"
("East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet"—— Rudyard Kipling)
